If you are the victim of identity theft or fraud. If you notice bills for credit cards or accounts you did not open. If you see charges on your regular bills that you did not purchase or sign for. You should immediately contact the three credit bureaus listed above by phone and ask for their fraud departments. Have them flag your file with a fraud alert. At the same time request a copy of your credit report. Then follow-up both requests in writing. Then use the check list below.
|
1) Report fraud to all 3 credit bureaus.
2) Get a police report out-lining your Identity theft.
3) Contact any account holders affected and report the crime to them.
4) Review your credit reports and dispute any incorrect items.
5) Always follow-up everything in writing. Its your only proof of action.
6) Close down affected accounts and re-open under new account numbers.
7) Password protect all accounts and personal information.
8) If your address has been altered or tampered with or you believe fraud is
being committed by mail. Contact the US Postal Inspectors Office.
9) If your Social Security Number appears to be compromised contact the
DMV and alert them that a fraudulent drivers license may have been applied
for. A new SSN# will not help and will confuse the investigation. Credit
bureaus combine all credit info anyway and the new number will be as
useless as the old.
10) Call the Federal Trade Commission and report identity theft.
11) Never have your SSN# as an ID number on any other identification.
12) Do not throw sensitive information, bills or receipts in the trash.
13) Remove all Instant Messengers from your computer system.
14) Opt Out of The Credit Bureau Trigger Lists. NEW
15) Check All 3 of Your Credit Reports Once a Year. NEW
