This map depicts the stroke belt of the United States. Notice how closely it follows the fried food
and Bible belts with an extra high occurance on the South East coastal (tobacco) planes. Strokes
are caused by a mineral dificency that is easily fixed. The U.S. is the stroke capital of the world.
Our soils do not contain the minerals needed to prevent this disease. Strokes are easy to prevent

Blood is carried to the brain via a complex network of arteries and vessels. A storke occures
when one of thies arteries becomes blocked or an artery ruptures.

U.S. Statistics  
 Stroke is the third leading cause of death, behind heart disease and cancer.  
 Each year, about 700,000 people suffer a stroke. About 500,000 of these are first attacks, and 200,000 are recurrent attacks. 
 Stroke killed 275,000 people in 2002 and accounted for about 1 of almost 15 deaths in the United States.  
 At all ages, 40,000 more women than men have a stroke. 
 28% of people who suffer a stroke in a given year are under age 65. 
 Compared with whites, young African Americans have a two- to threefold greater risk of ischemic stroke, and African-American men and women are more likely to die of stroke. 
 About 47 percent of stroke deaths occur out of hospital. 
 On average, someone in the United States suffers a stroke every 45 seconds; every 3.1 minutes someone dies of a stroke. 
 About 4.7 million stroke survivors (2.3 million men, 2.4 million women) are alive today. 
 The estimated age-adjusted prevalence of stroke for Americans aged 20 years and older is 2.2% for non-Hispanic white men and 1.5% for women; for non-Hispanic blacks, 2.5% for men and 3.2% for women; and for Mexican Americans, 2.3% for men and 1.3% for women (NHANES III, 1988-1994). 
 Stroke is the leading cause of serious, long-term disability in the United States. 
 8-12% of ischemic strokes and 37-38% of hemorrhagic strokes result in death within 30 days. 
 8% of men and 11% of women will have a stroke within six (6) years after a heart attack. 
 14% of people who have a stroke or TIA will have another within a year. 
 22% of men and 25% of women who have an initial stroke die within a year.

 Stroke is the fourth leading cause of death. 
 Over 50,000 strokes each year - including 16,000 deaths. 
 About 300,000 Canadians are living with the effects of stroke. 
 A stroke survivor has a 20% chance of having another stroke within 2 years.

A stroke is a sudden interruption in the blood supply of the brain. Most strokes are caused by an abrupt blockage of arteries leading to the brain (ischemic stroke).  Other strokes are caused by bleeding into brain tissue when a blood vessel bursts (hemorrhagic stroke). Because stroke occurs rapidly and requires immediate treatment, stroke is also called a brain attack. When the symptoms of a stroke last only a short time (less than an hour), this is called a transient ischemic attack (TIA) or mini-stroke. Stroke has many consequences. The effects of a stroke depend on which part of the brain is injured, and how severely it is injured. Strokes may cause sudden weakness, loss of sensation, or difficulty with speaking, seeing, or walking. Since different parts of the brain control different areas and functions, it is usually the area immediately surrounding the stroke that is affected. Sometimes people with stroke have a headache, but stroke can also be completely painless. It is very important to recognize the warning signs of stroke and to get immediate medical attention if they occur.

The most common sign of stroke is sudden weakness of the face, arm or leg, most often on one side of the body.

Other warning signs can include:

Sudden numbness of the face, arm, or leg, especially on one side of the body  
 Sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding speech  
 Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes  
 Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination  
 Sudden severe headache with no known cause

The signs of a stroke depend on the side of the brain that's affected, the part of the brain, and how severely the brain is injured. Therefore, each person may have different stroke warning signs. Stroke may be associated with a headache, or may be completely painless.

If you or someone you know is having these signs, call 911 and seek medical help immediately. Stroke is a medical emergency. Treatment is available, but only if a stroke is recognized in time. DO NOT try to diagnose the problem by yourself, and DO NOT wait to see if the symptoms go away on their own.

Even if the symptoms pass quickly, they could be an important warning that requires prompt medical attention.
